*Itinerary and times may change depending on weather and road conditions.
Kazakhs have a tradition of hunting small animals with the help of birds of prey such as falcons, hawks and eagles. For centuries on the steppe of Mongolia in Central Asia, falconry was a royal game of khans and nobles. Among the Kazakhs living in Mongolia's Altai Mountains, the ancient custom survives.
"The Kazakh nomads of Mongolia are a people of the world who maintain a unique nomadic lifestyle with a strong connection to hunting with golden eagles. Immerse yourself in the unique landscapes, culture and traditions of Western Mongolia and the life of local eagle hunters. Accompany these fascinating mountain nomads on the hunt and explore the breathtaking countryside."
A festival of Kazakh falconers held every autumn. A grand festival is held on the outskirts of Ulgii, the capital of Bayan-Ulgii Province. Parades of people in traditional costume on horseback, a contest in which a golden eagle is released on a small hill and called back to its owner to compete on speed, and a contest called "kokpar" in which people on horseback fight over a goat skin are held, along with contests of falconry skill.
There are about 250 eagle hunters around Bayan-Ulgii Province. Every year about 100 eagle hunters take part in this Eagle Festival with their specially trained golden eagles.
Spectacular events based on the speed, agility and accuracy of the magnificent golden eagles, and traditional Kazakh games such as archery and traditional horse racing, are also held on festival days. Enjoy two days of this autumn nomad festival, which many locals also attend.
Mongolia has many highlights besides the steppe. In the cultural landscape area known as the Orkhon Valley, many ruins and historic sites remain, and the most famous is the Karakorum ruins. When the Mongol and Turkic nomads who have long lived in Mongolia founded their states, they chose the Orkhon River basin for their capitals. Chinggis Khaan also ordered the capital of the Mongol Empire to be established there. By his order, the city of Karakorum was built in 1235, and it is famous for having been, for a time, the center of the world. Erdene Zuu of the Karakorum ruins is one of Mongolia's World Heritage Sites. Suddenly appearing in the steppe, the ruins consist of 108 striking white stupas and outer walls surrounding the Buddhist temple, a group of monasteries with a long history in Mongolia. A little walk from the ruins is Turtle Rock, and the site where the "Karakorum History Museum" was built with Japanese ODA.
