About Short Stays of Up to 30 Days

As of January 2026 (unchanged at present), for short stays of up to 30 days the visa is waived regardless of the purpose of travel. However, the passport must have at least 6 months of remaining validity.

For long stays over 30 days, you must apply for and obtain a visa. Apply in advance at the Mongolian diplomatic missions in Tokyo and Osaka and receive it there. It takes about 3 business days from application to receipt, and a multiple-entry visa of up to 6 months is $100. Procedures and conditions may change without notice, so please check in advance with the Mongolian diplomatic missions in Japan.

Steps to Obtain a Visa in Japan (for Stays Over 30 Days)

  • ① The inviting organization in Mongolia applies for a "visa permit" at Mongolia's Immigration Agency (equivalent to Japan's Immigration Services Agency).
  • ② When permission is granted, the Immigration Agency notifies the inviting organization and the Embassy of Mongolia in Japan of a 5-digit permit number.
  • ③ The inviting organization tells the applicant the 5-digit permit number.
  • ④ Based on the 5-digit number, the applicant applies for a visa at the Mongolian diplomatic mission in Japan (basically in person, by mail also possible).

Documents Required for Application

  • ① A passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity
  • ② Visa application form (download the "Visa Application Form," fill it in, and attach one photo 4.5 cm tall × 3.5 cm wide)
  • ③ A copy of the passport
  • ④ A certificate proving payment of the visa fee (basically the fee is paid by bank transfer)
  • * If you want the passport with the visa issued returned by mail, a return envelope with the recipient's address and a stamp for registered mail is required (however, no responsibility is taken for loss in the mail).

Foreigner Residence Registration (Over 30 Days)

If you stay in Mongolia over 30 days, you are required to register as a foreigner at the Immigration Agency within one week after entry. Registration requires a passport, one photo (4.5 cm × 3.5 cm) and an application form. Fingerprints are taken at registration. In addition, you must notify the khoroo office of your residence within 14 days of entry, and submit a certificate of enrollment (issued by a school or company) to the Immigration Agency within 21 days. When returning home (departing), you must complete deregistration procedures.
